"Pride goeth before destruction....." Proverbs 16:18
Pride encompasses man's desire to be God, moral self-righteousness, confidence in one's accomplishments, and ambition for prominence. It manifests as being unteachable and unthankful, elevating oneself beyond what is warranted.
Before a person faces destruction, they first tread the perilous path of pride.
Examples from History:
- Pharaoh's arrogance led to his downfall when he refused to acknowledge God's superiority and perished in the Red Sea without repentance.
- King Nebuchadnezzar, despite witnessing great works of God, fell victim to pride, resulting in his dethronement and disgrace.
- Eve's desire to be like God led to humanity's fall.
- Lucifer's rebellion stemmed from his aspiration to be like the Most High, resulting in his descent to hell.
Beyond biblical narratives, history is replete with examples of the devastating consequences of pride. From the downfall of ancient empires to modern-day leaders, pride has been a common thread in the fabric of human history, transcending cultural boundaries and time periods.
The Dangers of Pride:
- - Pride blinds individuals to their own faults and weaknesses, preventing them from seeking help or guidance when needed.
- - It fosters a sense of entitlement and superiority, leading to conflict and division in relationships and communities.
- - Moreover, pride can hinder personal growth and development by preventing individuals from acknowledging their limitations and learning from their mistakes.
Throughout the Bible, there are numerous warnings against the dangers of pride. Proverbs 16:18 states, "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
Similarly, James 4:6 warns, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."
These verses highlight the consequences of pride and the importance of humility in the eyes of God.
Overcoming Pride:
Pride emanates from the heart, leading one down the path of doom and damnation. To overcome pride, one must:
- - Humbly submit to the Almighty.
- - Live a moderate and contented life.
- - Prioritize others over oneself, and avoid using self-centered language. As stated in 1 Corinthians 15:31, "I die daily," emphasizing the need for daily self-reflection and humility
Nurturing Humility:
- - Saturate your heart with the word of God and maintain a steadfast prayer life. James 4:6 KJV reminds us, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."
- - Cultivating humility is an ongoing process that requires God's grace and practice. Simple acts of kindness, such as expressing gratitude, listening attentively to others, and admitting mistakes, can gradually chip away at the armor of pride and open the heart to humility's transformative influence.
By embracing humility and shunning pride, one can avoid the destructive consequences it brings and receive divine grace and exaltation in due time.
